It is pasted time for Enumclaw Merchants to take responsibility for their own Business Destiny. Co-op with other businesses of like mind and let’s move forward. Details at EnumclawBusiness.com.
I just couldn’t take it anymore. If times are not challenging enough we don’t need to be disheartened even more by listening to the Enumclaw Chamber and the Enumclaw City Council bicker back and forth in public. Like any long-term relationship the two have to work to keep things fresh, current and exciting. It has been my experience when a relationship seems to be at an impasse often times we call on a third party to help dig us out and “jump start” the communications again, OR… a stranger emerges out of the shadow (can you hear the spooky music) he begins to show value to the very things this relationship was taking for granted. Jealousy sets in on both sides and this stranger now becomes the common enemy, the relationship between the bickering couple is back on track and we have the hope of a happy ending.
We will see about the happy ending, one of the Enumclaw City Council members tossed out the idea to put the relationship with the Chamber in a holding pattern for 4 to 6 months perhaps to see if the relationship can truly be recovered. Will the Chamber be able to afford to keep the Visitor’s Center open that long? They say it is actually their “main function” but as they reported at the last two City Council Budget Meetings, they are broke and loosing membership. Will the stranger’s offer stay on the table for 6 months? Is he open to a long term commitment? What will happen to the Visitor’s Center and the Enumclaw Businesses in the mean time?
Tom Spencer the “Stranger” here, EnumclawBusiness.com only offered to run the Enumclaw Visitor’s Center and rent the building at the fair market value because the Chamber threatened the City that they were going to vacate and stop running the Center unless the City gave them $25,000. Now that the Budget Workshops are over the City Council has the task of evaluating all proposals and then letting the vote decide.
I hope it all works out but the Businesses of Enumclaw cannot afford to wait for another phase of this drama to play out, as it has already been 3 years. After talking to several Merchants in town I am challenging each business owner to make a decision to unite and become a co-op voice, taking responsibility for your own business destiny and stop expecting some non-profit group or city agency to pull a rabbit out of their? Hat? There could be a gathering of Merchants as soon as Friday morning, November 18, 2011. For more details go to EnumclawBusiness.com and click co-op. Let’s unite NOW.

Collectibles on Cole a new business in town…
…actually, a new business for several businesses.
Tom Spencer
Many folks in town will know this building as the “Old JC Penny Store”.
This Friday June 3rd from 9 AM to 6 PM all of Marilyn Nelson’s work will finally pay off and we will get to see the beautiful renovation. Out-side of being on the corner of Cole Street & Initial Avenue not much is the same, it is better, much better!
Experiencing the excitement of Marilyn & vendors putting on the final touches; setting up displays & stocking the kitchen this business already looks like a major success. Displaying all kinds of collectibles, CC’s Deli, The Fudge Queen, a Hair Salon & the soon opening Tea Room featuring High Tea.
There is still room for vendors as space is being offered at $2 a square foot. You can reach the new business by calling (360) 825-3134

Last July Enumclaw had over 25,000 guests with Creation 2011 come to the Expo Center for four days & nights & there were folks here that did not even know these people were in town. Well we did and we got over 17,000 hits on our WebSite. This year we are sounding the alarm!
What can each business do to prepare for Creation 2011, The Highland Games & The Street Fair?
Most of our guests use their cell phones, i-pads & laptops to find everything!
1. Check & make sure your business information is correct at EnumclawBusiness.com your business has been added FREE.
2. Make sure your WebSite is up to date, (maybe offer a special Creation Coupon buy 1 get 2nd half price).
3. Don’t have a WebSite? TheWebinator.com is offering FREE designed & built WebSites just for the cost of the monthly hosting (you will be on the internet in 48 hours).
4. Even if you don’t have a WebSite you can go to google places & at least add the physical location of your business there, it is FREE. All you need is an Email address, a phone line & a physical address.
5. I would recommend to do all of the above but if you do absolutely nothing else tape a hand-made sign that says Welcome Creation guests & if you want to verbally greet them in your place of business, our Creation guests will be wearing a colorful bracelet on their wrist.
Many of our guests will need our products & services, let’s make it easy to find us!

Our family discussions at the dinner table were about customers, shipments, alterations, sales and the new dress ties that just arrived. After school when most kids were walking home, I walked to the store. Being the youngest of four boys I would get the clean-up jobs in our family business; dusting, empting the trash, restack the dress shirts and vacuuming a half of block of carpet. I learned to “make change” and count money back to costumers at age eight. I wasn’t allowed to sell suits until I was sixteen but I sold plenty of shirts, ties and slacks before then.
I was amazed with how my brother would do the window displays, my dad would alter a pair of slacks while the costumer would wait, my mom always had a pencil in her hair while cranking rolls of white adding machine tape to the floor and how people would keep coming in the front door and spend money. Today I am more intrigued with business than ever and this web site EnumclawBusiness.com is a testimony of the “business fever” I was blessed with over 40 years ago. When I moved to Enumclaw it was just natural for me to befriend many business people and become part of the business community.
